Obituary

James T. Hammer, 79, of Lafayette and formerly of Logansport, died Tuesday, October 25, 2022 surrounded by his family at Saint Anthony Rehabilitation and Nursing Center where he had been a resident since 2008.

Born April 14, 1943 in Logansport, to the late Robert and Doris (Wagoner) Hammer, he graduated from Royal Center High School in 1961.

He married Diana Sue Oppy on June 4, 1967 in New Richmond and she preceded him in death on July 13, 2015.

Jim served in the US Army from 1961 until 1964, serving in Korea, France and Germany.

He retired from Tyson Foods in 2008 as the Human Resources Manager of the plant in Cherokee, IA. He had worked for them for a total of 39 years.

Surviving is a brother, William L. Hammer (wife Susan) of Hagerstown, MD, a son, Darrell M. Hammer (wife Tricia) of Noblesville and a daughter, Brett S. Turner (husband Kelly) of Lafayette. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Riley and Sophie Swann of Lafayette.

The family would like to give a special Thank You to Saint Anthony Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and Guardian Angel Hospice for their outstanding care during his final days. Those who would like to donate in his memory may do so to the American Cancer Society. A private family burial was held at New Richmond Cemetery in New Richmond.
