Ralph Marvin Rush, 76, of Arkansas City, passed away Wednesday (June 29, 2016) at the Wesley Medical Center of Wichita. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (July 6, 2016) at the First United Methodist Church of Arkansas City. Burial will follow in the Parker Cemetery. In honor of Ralph’s work hard and rest easy attitude, the family invites everyone to come to his services in casual attire.
The family will greet friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home
Ralph was born in Winfield, to Fred and Celestia (Davison) Rush. He attended Otto school first grade through eight grade. He later attended Winfield High School, working in the cafeteria during lunchtime and singing bass in the chorus. He graduated with the class of 1958. He attended one year at Arkansas City Junior College (Cowley College) while working for Jasper and Bea DeVore in 1959.
Ralph worked different place, learning different trades including Winfield Electric and C.K. Smith Plastering Company, before enrolling in 1960 at Braidwood, Illinois, Heavy Equipment School. He graduated from there in 1961. He learned about cranes there, but didn’t have the money to take the class, so would stand and watch the other students.
In 1962, since he was going to be drafted, he enlisted in the United States Air Force (to see the world). He was in basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Then Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas, for technical school: refrigeration, air conditioning. Then to Dyess Air Force Base, Abiline, Texas. Dyess AFB-578th SMS, part of the air-combat command under the 96th Strategic-Air-Command Wings (SAW) on the 12th Atlas 7 Missiles, serving three years, 11 months, 29 days, with honorable discharge.
While in the service, on May 12, 1962, Ralph married the love of his life, Sandra Gammon. To this union were born two daughters, Gail Rene and Robyn Christine. They moved to Arkansas City where they have lived for 54 years.
Ralph worked for Waldorf Sheet Metal, Cowley County Road Department, where, as the first bridge foreman, he organized and set up the bridge crew. Also he work for King Grain Company and 34 years at L.G. Pike Construction as crane operator, which was his passion. Due to his heart, he had to retire in 2009, but never lost his passion for operating the crane.
Ralph has also been involved with Terry Jacobs Backhoe Service, and also a grader for Walnut Township, Silver Creek Township, and Cedar Township. He was currently serving as secretary for the District 3 Water Board. He was a longtime member of the Shelton Beatty Post 18 American Legion.
Ralph was also serving on the Maple City Cemetery Board. He had worked with his dad, Fred, opening and closing the graves since 1955. He was a member of the Ark City First United Methodist Church, singing in the choir until 1994.
Preceding Ralph in death are his parents, and daughters Gail Rene and Robyn Christine.
He is survived by his wife Sandra Joyce (Gammon) Rush, sisters Charlotte M. Wise and Ida Jean Finney both of Winfield, Esther R. Sanborn of North Port, Florida, Neta D. Stanley of Gardner; brother Alan R. and wife Paulette Rush of Winfield, In-laws, Larry and Carlla Pike, Sharron and Dan Rexroat, and Robert Gammon; nieces and nephews: Donna Frazier, Brian Wise, Lora Rowe, Chris Finney, Iris Gladd, June Hamilton, Von Sanborn, Michael Rush, Aaron Rush, Barbara Hunt, Arian Stanley, Laura Stanley, Jennie Wassom, Darren Pike, Kevin Pike, Angela Bruce, Kirk Rexroat, and Emily Gammon.
Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church or Cowley College Endowment - Rush Family Memorial Scholarship. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
