Rockingham Register, Harrisonburg, Virginia
March 20, 1879: Barn Burned. The barn belonging to MANSFIELD MARSHALL, some
four miles North of Harrisonburg, was destroyed by fire on Wednesday of last week. The fire occurred about 12 o'clock in the day. It is supposed that the fire was communicated to a straw rick near the barn by a match which was accidentally dropped in the barn yard. As soon as the fire was discovered efforts were made to extinguish it, but the flames soon communicated to another rick of straw near the barn, and from this to the barn. In a very little time, the barn with all its contents was a heap of ruins. The flames spread with such rapidity that everything in the barn was burnt, including a valuable horse belonging to Mr. Marshall and a cow and calf belonging to Mr. Price , his son-in-law. We have heard no estimate of the loss.
