Hazel Turner Kump Burford, 81, of Elkins, WV died peacefully on Sunday, June 26, 2016, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Born in Elkins on August 17, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Cyrus Scott Kump and Hazel Turner Kump.

Hazel was also the first grandchild of West Virginia Governor Herman Guy Kump.

She was married to the late S. Franklin Burford.

Hazel leaves behind daughters Laura Billups Santmyer of Elkins, Deborah Billups Wilson of Huntington, WV and Paula Billups Kadyk of Tampa, FL; sons Turner F. Billups and Alan G. Billups both of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, grandchildren, Jessica Putzulu Brookings, Amber Nicholson Brown, Jared Kadyk, Tara Putzulu Meade, Rachel Wilson Hunt, Megan Wilson Schumaker, Zachary Wilson, Kayja Billups, Rorie Billups, Paul Billups, Taylor Billups and Nicole Billups, 15 great-grandchildren, sisters, Ann Kump Finley of Marlinton and Meredith Kump Beaver of East Berlin, PA and brothers William Kump of Norfolk, VA, Herman Guy Kump of Charlotte, NC and Cyrus Kerr Kump of Elkins.

Hazel graduated from Elkins High School and Davis and Elkins College.

She worked for 14 years for the Department of Welfare and served on Elkins City Council for Third Ward District.

Hazel was a champion to many.

Her bold presence and elegant demeanor left an indelible impression on all who met her.

She was larger than life, made us all stand a little taller and will be greatly missed.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Graceland on the campus of Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Hazel’s memory to
Lavender Fields Assisted Living Facility 150 Water Street P. O. Box 446 Beverly, WV 26253.
