On Aug. 3, 1994 Melissa Padilla, a 25-year-old woman was grabbed as she walked along Routes 1 & 9 in Woodbridge carrying a bag of groceries for her four children, then ages 5, 4, 3, and 2. Her life was taken by Steve Fortin who beat, robbed, raped and strangled Padilla and was finally caught and convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
"Things have been so hard. I was never able to kiss her goodbye," said Desiree Padilla, now 17, who was 2 years old at the time of the murder. "I have no memories of my mother, but I have a place in my heart for her."
