MRS. M. D. CAREY
(Reprinted because of errors in obituary as printed in last week's paper.)
Mrs. Mary Drucilla Carey was born in Clinton county, Missouri, on October 1, 1858. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alex C. and Mary Ann Bevins Cook, pioneer residents of northwest Missouri. R. C. Cook of Plattsburg is the only member of this family now living. She was married May 6, 1880, to William Carey, by Elder G. W. Longan, widely known Christian minister of that generation. Mr. Carey died about thirty-five years ago. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Carey lived a short while in Platte county, then returned to the Bethany community in Clinton county. Mrs. Carey's whole life was thus lived almost entirely in this county. After leaving the farm her home was at Plattsburg. To Mr. and Mrs. Carey were born eight children. One of these, Ruby, died about ten years ago. The living children are: Curtis of Batesland, S. Dak.; Mrs. Grace D. Stipe of Kansas City; Virgil of Los Angeles, Calif.; Alex of Ferrilview; Mrs. Mayme Spangler of California; Clifton of Plattsburg, and Mrs. Lucille C. Hoskins of Omaha, Nebr. She is survived also by eight grandchildren. Only recently all seven sons and daughters visited their mother, which was an occasion of deep joy and satisfaction to her, and will always be remembered by all of them as a most sacred memory. This visit from the children took place after she had gone to Kansas City for treatment, and proved even a more reviving tonic for her failing strength than any medicine. Mrs. Carey in spite of her advanced age, enjoyed reasonably good health until recent months. She gradually grew weaker in spite of loving care and professional skill, both at home and in Kansas City where every effort of helpful science was made to restore her to health. It was known for several weeks that recovery could not be expected, but her ailment caused her no suffering, and she was able to enjoy visits with friends and loved ones until the closing hours of her earthly pilgrimage. Her death occurred early the morning of August 9, 1935, she being at that time 76 years, 10 months and 8 days of age. Mrs. Carey was blest with an enviable Christian ancestry, and the traditions and trends of her home training made a foundation upon which to build the strong Christian character that she had. Early in life she became a member of the Bethany congregation of the Christian church. Since moving to Plattsburg, Mrs. Carey's membership has been with the Christian church here, and she was a most helpful member in church, prayer meeting, Sunday school, and missionary society services. She was interested not only in the church but in the educational and other worthwhile community interests. She was a most estimable lady, a wonderful mother, kind friend, and loyal Christian. The funeral was a most largely attended one, and was held at the Plattsburg Christian Church Sunday afternoon, and burial was in Greenlawn cemetery.
