Roderick Luke Miller
Funeral services will be held at a Requiem High Mass at 11 a.m. today at Martin and Castille funeral Home Chapel in Lafayette, for Roderick "Rod" Luke Miller, 80, who died at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, in Lafayette, at his home attended by his wife, Jane Miller, Carmel Soileau, Linda Miller and the Rev. Francis Miller.

Internment will be in the Calvary Cemetery.

Rod was a native of Reddell, Evangeline Parish, and resident of Lafayette since 1952. He was a graduate of Vidrine High School in Evangeline Parish, and a 1947 graduate of SLI (ULL). He lived in New Orleans while attending Loyola Law School and graduated in 1949. He served in the Army Air Force as a navigator on B-29's during WW II and was reactivated as a first lieutenant during the Korean War. Rod practiced law for many years with Charles DeBaillon, in the firm of DeBaillon & Miller.

Rod was a Republican Party activist. In 1966 he was the first Republican elected to the House of Representatives from Lafayette Parish. He served for many years on the Republican State Central Committee and the Lafayette Parish Executive Committee, recently receiving the Louisiana Republican Party's Lifetime Service Award. He was a member of the Carmelite Men's Guild. He served as President of CODA, Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3202, President and District Lieutenant Governor of Hub City Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the American Legion and active in Boy Scouts.

Rod was an avid member of the Acadiana Barbershop Chorus and most recently the Four Fathers Quartet. Rod's s interest in the preservation of his native French language led him to participate in "La Table Francaise" where he met his wife Jane.

Rod was a member of the Christ the King Roman Catholic Church of Lafayette. He was deeply concerned by the changes in the church after Vatican II and took a leading role in supporting priests and bishops who remained faithful to the Mass of Pius V.

Rod is survived by his wife, Jane Brinkhaus Gaiennie Miller, a native of Sunset; three daughters, Mrs. Bruce "Jeanine" Billeaud and Mrs. Daniel "Carmel" Soileau of Lafayette, and Mrs. John "Julie" McCarthy of Shreveport; five sons, Thomas Miller of Mandeville, Kenneth Miller, John Miller, Fr. Francis "Emile" Miller, and Normand Miller, all of Lafayette; stepson, Richard Gaiennie of Opelousas; and stepdaughters, Dianne Gaiennie Davis of Spanish Fort, Ala., and Suzanne Gaiennie of Opelousas.

He is survived by 33 grand-children, Jimmy, Laura, Mary-Margaret and Roderick Miller, of Mandeville, Mrs. Katie Hintze of Perryville, Mo., and Fr. John Sebastian "Fred", Mrs. Sarah Scott, of Seoul, S. Korea, Emily, Pvt. First Class Benjamin "Ben", Rachel Miller; Claire, Lauren and Nichole Miller of Lafayette; Clemencia, Jennifer, Paul, Matthew, Dominic, Michelle, Annette, Elizabeth and Mark Billeaud of Carencro; Kathleen and Kelly McCarthy of Shreveport; Therese, Colette, Christine and Christopher Soileau of Lafayette and Andrew, Jeanne, Jessica, Aimee and Jacob Miller of Lafayette; seven stepgrandchildren Allen, Matthew and John Michael Davis of Spanish Fort, Ala., Mary Virginia Guice, Calvin and Edward Gaiennie and Isabella Moreau, all of Opelousas; one great-grandchild, David Hintze; three sisters, Grace Davis of Redmond, Wash., Elaine Richardson of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Ione Villars of Marrero; and three brothers, Eugene Miller of Monroe, Quentin Miller of Carencro and Ludger Miller of Pearl River.

Rod was preceded in death by his parents, Cleophas and Isabelle Michot Miller;' his first wife, Clemencia "Clemy" Clotworthy Miller; an infant daughter, Mary Evangeline; and a sister, Freida Ann Thomas of Athens, Ga.

Pallbearers are Kenneth Miller, John Miller, Normand Miller, Paul Billeaud, Bruce Billeaud, Daniel Soileau and John McCarthy. Honorary pallbearers are Eugene Miller, Quentin Miller, Ludger Miller and Charles DeBaillon.
