Lester A. Kearney, 86, of Titusville, Fla., formerly of New Kensington, died Wednesday (Aug. 7, 2002) in his home.
Born Aug. 11, 1915, in New Kensington, he lived in Titusville for 18 years.
He attended the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Maryland.
A veteran, he served in World War II and the Korean War with the Army as a battlefield officer and a member of the 135th Infantry Regiment and the 34th "Red Bull" Division. He participated in the taking of Anzio Beachhead and the Liberation of Rome operations and received a combat infantry badge, Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star with clusters. He retired as a lieutenant colonel after 22 years of service.
Mr. Kearney worked at Alcoa, New Kensington, and was a human resources administrator at Micro-biological Associates in Bethesda, Md.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Titusville, where he was treasurer, a founding member and treasurer of Hope Lutheran Church, Annandale, Va., and was a 32nd-degree Mason in Titusville.
He enjoyed traveling and golfing.
Survivors include a son, Keith (Deborah) Kearney of London; a daughter, Leslie Kearney of Connecticut; a brother, James (Elaine) Kearney of California; and two sisters, Clara Loos of New Kensington and Mrs. Ruth (Mark) Gallaway of Texas.
Also surviving is a grandson, John "Jack" Kearney of London, and a stepgranddaughter, Mrs. Hillarie (John) Green.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Olga Stuckley Kearney; his parents, James and Clara Denny Kearney; and an infant sister, Margaret Kearney.
Friends will be received from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday in JOHN F. KRUPA FUNERAL HOME INC., 1000 Freeport Road, New Kensington. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. in First United Presbyterian Church, New Kensington, by the Rev. Kenneth Hooten. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park mausoleum, Lower Burrell. Full military honors will be accorded by Natrona Heights VFW Post 894. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, in First United Methodist Church, Titusville.
