Mr. Thos. Skillen, Aged 85, Succumbed After Brief Illness.
Rosewood, Oct. 18. - This district has lost one of its most respected residents. Mr. Thomas Skillen passed away early on Saturday morning after a very short illness, at the ripe old age of 85 years. Mr. Skillen was a native of Ireland, having been born near Belfast. At the age of twenty he came to Canada and settled near Ottawa, in Carleton county, where he lived for some time, and later moved up the Gatineau river. Thirty-five years ago saw Mr. Skillen on the trail for Manitoba, and he was one of the best known among the pioneers east of the Red river. A widow and a large family are left to mourn his loss and they have the sincere sympathy of the whole country for miles around. The funeral, which was attended by a very large number of friends, was held on Monday, the 16th, the pall bearers being Messrs. Jos. Irwin, Wm. Norman, Foster Irwin, Chas. Claydon, D. McNevan and N. Irwin. The Rev. Mr. Archibald held a short but impressive service at the house.
