Civil War: Company B, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers


Nathaniel B. Applebee was enumerated at Norwich, McKean County, Pennsylvania, in 1840. He was enlisted under the alias John (Eucher?) Smith by Captain George Washington Ousley and was mustered into Company B, First Battalion of Mountaineers (Infantry), California Volunteers, at Arcata, Humboldt County, California, April 15, 1863. At his enlistment Nathaniel stated that he was born at Littleton, Grafton County, New Hampshire, and he was 50 years old and by occupation he was a Laborer. His enlistment contract described him as being 6 feet, with Light complexion and with Gray eyes and hair. During July, 1863, Private Applebee was absent from his company as escort for a Government pack train. During August, 1863, he was detached from his company and was stationed at Dows Prairie (located within present-day McKinleyville, Humboldt County). During September, 1863, he was absent from his company at Camp Curtis, near Arcata. During April, 1864, he was sick. From August 24 to December, 1864, Private Applebee was on Detached Service at Camp Anderson located on the right bank of Redwood Creek about 27 miles northeast of Arcata opening up trails. During March and April Private Applebee was sick in the hospital. Private Applebee mustered out at Camp Curtis, Humboldt County, California, May 13, 1865. Nathaniel B. Applebee married Rachel Ann Moore in Oregon during 1867. John Smith, age 53 years and a Cattle Raiser, was enumerated during August, 1870, at Curry County, Oregon, with Rachel A. Smith 30, John (Thomas Post) Smith 14, Emma (Post) Smith 12, Asher (Henry Post) Smith 11, Ida (Florence Post) Smith 8, Charles William (Post) Smith 6 and Armenia Smith 1. N. B. Appleby, age 72 years and a Farmer, was enumerated during June, 1880, at Port Orford, Curry County, Oregon, with Rachel A. Appleby 41, Armenia C. Appleby 11, Thomas Appleby 8, Catherine Appleby 5 and Amelia Appleby 2.

An application for a certificate in lieu of a lost discharge was received at the Adjutant General's Office, War Department, Washington, October 15, 1888; the certificate was furnished.

Thomas Cornwall, a guardian for a minor child(ren?) of Nathaniel B. Applebee, filed from Oregon for a Minor's pension September 28, 1891, and received application No. 527,718 and certificate No. 593,124.


Rachel A. Ayers, widow of Nathaniel B. Applebee filed from Oregon for a widow's pension March 15, 1917, and received application No. 1,096,015 and certificate No. 835,075.
