After returning home from Vietnam, Gary married Joan Fairfield of Roeland Park, KS on December 4, 1971. The two moved to Wichita, where he attended Wichita State and worked in the engineering department at Cessna. Gary and Joan then moved to Overland Park where they began a family and welcomed a daughter and son to their family.
Gary was an avid archer and rifle hunter, who loved spending time in the woods. His love of sports ranged from lettering in several sports while in high school, being one of the most sought after umpires, playing baseball at Emporia State, and as an adult coaching both his children’s sports teams and grandchildren’s soccer teams. Gary also had a love of music his entire life, having attended the conservatory of music for piano, teaching himself the steel and acoustic guitar and loving to attend live music performances.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, William Gurney Nutt and his mother Ava Quentin (Kincheloe) Nutt. Gary is survived by his wife Joan Nutt, daughter Kimberly (Jeremy) Ryals, son Justin (Shannon) Nutt, brother Daryl (Connie) Nutt, several nieces and nephews, and 4 grandchildren; Spencer, Avery, and Kenna Ryals, and Ava Nutt.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 21 at the Amos Family Funeral Home; burial in the Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens with Military Honors. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
