James Chittleborough served in the military on 1 November 1803 in Phoebe, Canterbury, when he was 22 years old.
He was Ship's Corporal at the Battle of Trafalgar under the command of Lieutenant John Hindmarsh.

One of the founding Fathers of South Australia having arrived on the Buffalo.
