James “Jim” Alex, age 84, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family in Canton, MA on Thursday, August 6, 2015 after a brief struggle with brain cancer.

Born on April 22, 1931 at Boston City Hospital to Peter James Alex and Elizabeth Eliopoulos Alex, Jim graduated from Dorchester High School and later was drafted into the Armed Forces. He served in the Korean War, attaining the rank of sergeant while assisting veteran amputee victims in taking steps forward and building new lives at the Percy Jones U.S. Army Hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan. After completing his military service, Jim worked for thirty five years
as an Executive Director for the Boston-based Massachusetts Property Insurance Underwriting Association, overseeing the challenge of insuring high risk properties. After retirement, Jim was able to realize his long-time dream of residing on the Cape.

Jim will be especially remembered for his gentle and courteous demeanor, his respect for hard work and financial prudence, and his devotion to the automobile.

Survivors include his wife, his son, his daughter, his son-in-law, his brother, his nephew, and his niece. Jim held a special place in his heart for his grandchildren, Patrick James Maguire and Matthew William Maguire, who will dearly miss their beloved “Papou”.
