His census records give a birth date range of 1781-1790. His military record gives a date of 1787.

William was the son of Nathaniel and Nancy Howard Edwards, of Montgomery County, North Carolina. There is no known marriage record, so that the name of his wife is unknown. He was first documented in Wilson County in the 1804 tax records. He resided on his 15 acre land grant, adjoining the Robert Edwards land grant on Hurricane Creek. He sold the land in 1816, and then moved to Carroll County in the 1820s. William received a 20 acre land grant in 1822 in Carroll County. The ownership of this grant was assigned to his brother Hiram in 1824. William moved to Gibson County, TN in the late 1830s and was next door to his son Michael in the 1840 census. That 1840 census in Gibson County was the last record in the life of William. There are no records in the State of Tennessee after 1840 which can be identified as his or his widow.

William and Mrs. Edwards had seven surviving children, 3 boys and 4 girls. Five of the children were born in Wilson County, between 1805 and 1820. The county of birth of the others is uncertain. The known children are Michael, Jarrot, Bradford, Jane, Alsey, and Nancy. A fourth daughter remains unidentified.
Drewry Edwards is sometimes shown as a son of William in family trees. Drewry has been correctly identified as a son of Howard Edwards.
