Leonard "Leo" Caleb Cardwell

Leo was born 19 Mar 1895 in Jefferson, Marion County, Oregon. He is a son of James Cardwell and Anna Cornelius. The family moved from Oregon, south to Fresno, California. Leo had visited Santa Cruz, and in the early 1920's moved on his own to Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, California. In 1929, he started Leo Cardwell Construction Company, building bridges and roadways through out the cities and county of Santa Cruz, and also in surrounding counties. Over the years, Leo's step son Virgil M. Kester Sr. and his grandson Virgil "Pete" Kester Jr., worked for him. In 1954, Leo retired and sold his company to Granite Construction. It was shortly after his retirement, while vacationing in Las Vegas, Nevada, Leo passed away. His ashes are interned in the Mausoleum at Santa Cruz Memorial Park.
