George Mosely Cooper, age 86, passed away Sunday morning, June 12, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Eugene Cooper and Catherine Elizabeth Cooper Neilson and his step father Claud Dent Neilson, his brother Ernest Eugene Cooper Jr, and his sister Mary Elizabeth Cooper O'Connor.

George was born in Tuscaloosa and attended Stafford Elementary School, Tuscaloosa Junior High School, and Tuscaloosa Senior High School walking from his home on Queen City Avenue. He attended Auburn University with plans to manage the Neilson Family Farm. When his grandfather died the farm was sold. His senior year he was drafted into the Korean War but was allowed to graduate. He was sent to counter intelligence school in Baltimore, Maryland for six weeks and deployed to Sasebo Japan where he learned Japanese and Japanese traditions. He then was assigned to a small base of eight with a major in command where he worked with his Japanese partner Misiguche Hiroshi.

Upon his discharge he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama and attended medical school in Birmingham, Alabama with an internship at St Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham and then to Boston, Massachusetts and Harvard. There he met Dr. Herbert Kaufman who had been at the National Institute of Health but had been recruited by the University of Florida to start a residency program in ophthalmology.

He persuaded George to come to Gainesville, Florida to complete his training and George was the first doctor to complete the ophthalmology residency program. He returned to his hometown where he opened his office. At that time he took call for ear, nose, throat, as well as eye as DCH had not separated the two specialities. He retired after 40 years of practice.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a lifetime member of Dollarhide Hunting Camp. He liked playing golf at Indian Hills Country Club and North River Yacht Club and was a member of many social organizations. George grew up an Alabama football fan as his father, "Shorty" Cooper, was Captain of the 1922 University of Alabama football team that holds the record for most points ever scored by an Alabama team 110-0 over Marion Institute. He was a fan of all Alabama Athletic programs and was an early member of the Alabama Basketball tip off club.

A Mass of Christian burial will be downtown at St John the Baptist Catholic Church Wednesday, June 15 at 10:00am. with internment at Evergreen cemetery.
