Retta Mae Jones was born in Ferris Texas, arriving in the fall, on the 1st day of October, 1945. She was the fifth child born to John Henry and Ethel Jones. In November of 1947 the family relocated to Elmer Oklahoma for a short period then moving to Altus, Oklahoma in February of 1961, which became the family’s permanent home.

She received her primary education through junior and senior high at Lincoln High School. Her brothers and sisters sometimes teased her about her inability to properly pull and chop cotton. She then obtained employment at the Elks Golf and Country Club, later securing a position at Kmart where she retired. She was a committed and faithful member of Spirit of the Lord Equipping Church.

Retta Mae loved her family. You could hear in her voice the love for her daughter, Jurneathea, whom she affectionately addressed as “Jerrie”, every time she spoke her name. She was so proud of her. She raised her to be a spiritually strong, independent, compassionate and productive individual. Retta Mae loved and respected her parents, brothers and sisters. Their relationships and interactions with one another are intricate and cherished.

The Lord showed favor and we were blessed to have her as our very own. She was affectionately known to her family by many names, “Fat Momma, “Aint” Retta Mae, Poon and Mae-Mae. She had a quiet little laugh and a gentle smile. She was a surrogate to her nieces and nephews throughout their young lives into adulthood. We each have fond memories of her. There was never a gentler spirit, never a more caring heart than hers.

Retta Mae was preceded in death by her parents John Henry and Ethel Jones, her sister-n-law Annette Jones, her nephew Joe Nathan Alexander and her great nephew Malcolm Shabazz Agustine.

Those left to cherish her precious memory and beautiful spirit: Her daughter and son-in law Jurneathea and Mark Rice and her grandson Micheal Rice. Her seven siblings and their spouses; Her brothers Edward Jones and his wife Marcy, JC Jones and his wife JoAn, Earnest Ray Jones. Her sisters; Jurlene Alexander and her husband BL, Ethel Louise Jones, Loretta Laws and her husband James. The memories they have for her are treasured.

Her tender and nurturing spirit is equally and affectionately remembered by twice as many nieces, nephews and their spouses; Vickey Alexander, Larneathea Alexander, Areilia Alexander, De Wayne Jones & his wife Lois, Zappard Jones-Lemons and her husband Ray, Rhoda Hall, Gennifer Jones, McCarty Jones, Sonya Matilda Jefferson, Winfred Ray Jones, Jayetta Carol Jones, Dwight Stevenson, Timonthy Ray Jones, Derick Jones and Mark Keith Jones. There are innumerable great nephews, great nieces, cousins and beloved lifelong friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.
