Major League Baseball Player. For eight seasons (1956 to 1963), he played at the shortstop position with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers and New York Mets. Born Humberto (Perez) Fernandez, he was signed by the Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1951 and marked his Major League debut with Brooklyn on July 14, 1956. He went on to play in 34 games with the Dodgers' squad which captured the National League Pennant that season. After he was acquired by the Phillies, he played at the starting shortstop position for two seasons (1957 and 1958) and produced a career-high 131 hits in 1957. He was dealt to Detroit prior to the 1960 season and earned the starting shortstop position for three seasons (1960 to 1963) with the Tigers. In 856 career regular season games, he compiled 666 hits with a lifetime .240 batting average. After retiring from baseball, he worked in the insurance industry. Fernandez died of complications from a stroke.
