On August 8, 1907, Helen Modesta Malloy was born to Jennie "Jane" Croker Malloy and James E. Malloy. Helen was reunited with her heavenly family on November 2, 2006. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, James and Jane; sisters, Fanny, Mary, Letty, Marcella, Meg and a baby sister; brothers, Gene, Harry, Charley, John, Joe, Bernie, and Dan; and her best friend, Mary Staggs.
Helen graduated from State Center High School in 1925, attended Iowa State Teachers College and Illinois State Normal University and received her license to teach elementary education in 1928. She did further work at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Iowa, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Administration in 1940. She taught grade school in State Center for 10 years. Helen became a social worker and worked for the State Department of Social Welfare from 1938 to 1953. Helen became a social worker at Broadlawns Medical Center in 1954 and was elevated to the position of the Director of Mental Health, which she held until retirement in 1977. Helen will be lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, November 6, at Our Lady of Peace Chapel, Bishop Drumm Care Center, with a vigil service beginning at 7 p.m. Helen's Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 7, at Our Lady of Peace Chapel, Bishop Drumm Care Center. She will be buried next to family members at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Colo, IA. Memorials may be directed to Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation, Dowling Catholic High School or Bishop Drumm Care Center. When asked what she wanted for an epitaph, at age 99 Helen said "Here We Go!" Aunt Helen, we will miss your spunk and enthusiasm for life.
