According to the 1870 census, she was born about 1867 in Texas. Her parents were enumerated in Milam county in 1860 and 1870, so it is presumed that she was born in Milam County.

Cameron, July 30. -- Late yesterday evening the two daughters of Captain Shelton, who were with their father traveling in a wagon for a health and pleasure trip, concluded that they would go in bathing in Little river, close by the iron bridge, at the old McCown ferry. Captain Shelton went into the water also, and playfully invited his daughters out to him, where the water was somewhat deep. The young ladies went, but, becoming scared, fell upon their father, upsetting him and themselves, and, falling into the deep water, were carried under by the whirl of the current and both were drowned. The old gentleman could render no assistance, and himself narrowly escaped drowning. These unfortunate young ladies were aged respectively seventeen and twenty years.
