Bobby Joe Burns was born on September 12, 1926, to C. L and Pearl Smith Burns in Cheyenne, Oklahoma, and passed away on June 10, 2016 at the age of 89 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Bob grew up in rural Roger Mills County and attended Cheyenne Schools before secretly marrying his Sweetheart and the love of his life, Elverta Grace Hills on May 20, 1944. During his senior year in high school, Bob joined the Merchant Marines and served two tours of duty. After being Honorably discharged in 1946, he completed his high school course work and received his diploma from Cheyenne High School.
Bob and Elverta were both active in the communities in which they lived, but their lives were made complete when "Unto them a child was given." Lisa Katherine, born June 26, 1959, came to be theirs at the age of five weeks. No child could have brought more joy to parents than she.
During his working years, Bob worked in the insurance business before successfully investing in the oil business. They loved to travel, especially with Bob's brother and sister-in-law, Leland and Bernice Burns, always with golf clubs in hand and a funny story upon return. Bob and Elverta made friends wherever they traveled or lived because of their love for people.
They referred to Shreveport, Louisiana, and Oklahoma City as home, before retiring to Lake Texoma at Kingston, Oklahoma, where they spent their golden years enjoying the beautiful lake and entertaining numerous family members and friends. They even hosted a golf tournament in celebration of their 50th Wedding Anniversary. In May, they celebrated 72 years of marriage.
Bob was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Heinen; his parents, C.L. and Pearl Burns; and Father and Mother-in-law, Elvert Ray and Grace Hills, sister-in-law Arlene O'Neil and husband Ed; and brother-in-law, Bud Hills. Survivors include his wife Elverta, Grandson Brice Heinen, brother Leland and Bernice Burns, numerous nieces and nephews, and a great many friends.
Services for Bob Burns will be 10:00 AM Monday, June 13, 2016 at the Smith & Kernke N. May Chapel with burial to follow at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery.
