Author. Best known for the award-winning novel "Sophie's Choice", which detailed a non-Jewish Holocaust survivor from Poland, he was awarded the 1968 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his work "The Confessions of Nat Turner." His other works included "A Tidewater Morning," a collection of fiction pieces, a book of essays, "This Quiet Dust," and the best-selling memoir "Darkness Visible," in which he recalled nearly taking his own life.
