Per his death certificate found on Ancestry.com: he was a son of Wm. J. Gaines and Anna Gaines, both born in S. C., and the husband of App Gaines. He was a minister. He died at his home on S. Green St. in Glasgow of aden carcinoma of the lung. The informant was Mrs. Jos. A. Gaines of Glasgow.

Found in The State 10 April 1941: Dr. Joseph A. Gaines of Glasgow, Ky., former pastor of the First Baptist church died early Wednesday morning after being in declining health for the past two years. He was born at Bradley, June 2, 1888, and was educated at the University of South Carolina, the Presbyterian Theological seminary in Columbia, and the Baptist Theological seminary in Louisville, Ky. He married Miss App Estes of Louisville, Ky., who with two children, Mrs. Carroll O'Brien of Rock Hill and Joseph A. Gaines, Jr., of Clemson college, survive. He is also survived by his mother, Mr. W. J. Gaines, Columbia; two sisters, Mrs. C. F. McFarland, Oakmon; Pa., and Mrs. Herbert Langford, Columbia; two brothers, Lieut. Col., E. P. Gaines, United States army air corps, and Dr. W. J. Gaines, Jr., University of Richmond, Virginia; one grandson, Robert Joseph O'Brien; four nieces and two nephews. Doctor Gaines' early life evidenced a leaning towards religious work and he served the Baptist board as BYPU inspector in South Carolina and engaged in YMCA work in Louisiana before entering his life work. He was ordained to preach at the Tabernacle Baptist church here. He served pastorates at Trenton, his parent's home at that time, for three years. He was pastor of the Baptist church at Timmonsville for four years. Then he was called to St. John's Baptist church, Charlotte, N. C., where a new church was built during his pastorate of seven years. For the last 12 years he has been pastor of the First Baptist church, Glasgow, Ky. Doctor Gaines had been highly honored by his denomination during the years he had been in Kentucky. For six years he was moderator of Liberty association; he served on the board of some of the Baptist colleges in Kentucky; was Hundred Thousand club leader for the state in the early days of that movement; was assistant moderator of the General Association of Kentucky Baptists in 1933 and at the time of his death was president of the Kentucky Baptist Education society. He was a gifted speaker and fifty of his sermons are being published in a book of sermons. He received his doctor of divinity degree from Bethel college, Hopkinsville, Ky., in 1932. Doctor Gaines was a Mason and a member of Rotary International. While in Charlotte he was active in Boy Scout work at that city. The funeral will be held at Glasgow, Ky., with committal services at Elmwood cemetery, Columbia, at 5:30 Friday afternoon. The services in Columbia will be in charge of the Rev. T. Clyde Helms, assisted by the Rev. A. B. Kennedy of Columbia, and the Rev. Edgar Davis of Swansea.
