Roman Catholic Cardinal. León born Miguel Darío Miranda y Gómez entered seminary in his native city, later furthering his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Pio Latin American College in Rome, Italy. Ordained priest there on October 28, 1918, back in León he formed part of the teaching staff of the named seminary up till 1937, with the exception of a few years while serving as director of the National Social Secretariat and after being imprisoned and exiled during the religious persecution of 1926-1929. Elected bishop of Tulacingo by Pope Pius XI on October 1, 1937, he received his episcopal consecration at the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 8 that year from Msgr. Leopoldo Ruíz Flores. Appointed coadjutor of the metropolitan see of México of December 20, 1955, receiving the titular archbishopric see of Selimbria, he was named successor to Msgr. Luis María Martínez y Rodríguez as archbishop by Pope Pius XII on June 28, 1956. President of the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM), between 1958 and 1963, Pope Paul VI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of April 28, 1969 with the title of Nostra Signora di Guadalupe a Monte Mario. A staunch advocate of social justice, the cardinal resigned the pastoral government of his see on July 19, 1977. Spending his later years in his native León, although he passed away there in 1986 at the age of ninety, his remains were interred in the metropolitan cathedral of México City.
