J.G. Davis, Sr. Died Friday Of Heart Attack

John G. Davis Sr., 67, who had been a resident of Castro County for the past 25 years died of a heart attack early Friday morning, August 25, in Dallas.

Mr. Davis had accompanied his wife, Mrs. Davis, to Dallas in July where she underwent major surgery, and was still in the doctor's care at the time of his death.

Funeral services for Mr. Davis were held Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock under the direction of Gililland Funeral Home of Hereford at the First Methodist Church in Dimmitt. Rev. Ural S. Sherrill of Sudan officiated, assisted by Rev. E.L. Stanford and Earl R. Landtroop of Dimmitt.

Mr. Davis had been a member of the Methodist Church since early manhood. He was a member of the Board of Stewards at Snyder, and also at Bethel where they lived until moving to Dimmitt.

He was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 159 of Dimmitt and was a past Grand Noble.

Mr. Davis took great interest in the community affairs, both civic and spiritual.

Mr. Davis, with his three brothers, Tom, Walter, and Roy operated a grocery store in Snyder for a number of years, in the early part of the century. Until he moved to Castro County in 1925, he was engaged in farming and ranching west of Snyder.

He farmed and engaged in cattle raising in Castro County until three years ago, when he and Mrs. Davis moved to Dimmitt. At the time of his death he was working for the government.

Tom C. Davis, 73, of Snyder, brother of Mr. Davis, died in Snyder early Saturday morning of a heart attack. He had returned to his home in Snyder the Wednesday before from the Hendricks Memorial Hospital in Abilene after major surgery. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the First Methodist Church in Snyder.

J.G. Davis Sr. was born at Floyd, Hunt County, Texas on March 15, 1883. He was married to Janie Mary Hudspeth in October 1901 and they moved to Curry County in 1903, where she died in November of that year.

Mr. Davis was again married to Mary Julia Meador, October 11, 1905 at Snyder.

Ushers for the funeral were J.M. Wright, Bob Singer, Fred Sims, Bob Estes, Harold Gladman and Bub Ramey.

Active pallbearers were Harry Rothwell, Earl Lust, Brad Fulfer, Raymond Wilson, E.B. Wright, R.V. McMahon and Jim Bagwell of Aimstad, N.M.

Flower girls were Mrs. Fred Sims, Mrs. Bob Singer, Mrs. Ralph Sims, Mrs. John Bagwell, Mrs. Kenny Gearns, Mrs. E.C. Caudle, Mrs. Harry Rothwell, Mrs. J.M. Wright, Mrs. Raymond Wilson, Mrs. Floyd Copeland, Mrs. Delmond Neumayer, Mrs. Truett Boothe, Mrs. Jim Elder, Mrs. Brad Fulfer, Mrs. Velma Gunnels, Mrs. Robert Ramey, Mrs. Fred Long, and Mrs. Buddie Calhoun.

Burial was in the Dimmitt Cemetery with member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in charge of grave side services.

Survivors include Mrs. Davis and their children, Mrs. Janie Smith and Mrs. Ina Cleo Richardson of Big Spring and J.G. Davis Jr. of Dimmitt. One brother, Roy Davis, of Greenville. He is also survived by four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
