Dr. Dickenhorst was raised in Morrilton, AR. He attended Hendrix College and then studied medicine at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. He completed an internship at St. Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock followed by a residency in radiology at Charity Hospital in Shreveport. He served in the Navy for two years in San Diego, CA. He moved to Monroe in 1952 where he became the city's first radiologist. He subsequently became a Diplomat of the American Board of Radiology. Later in life, he took on a second profession, acquiring and managing Louisiana Delta farmland. He had a lifelong passion of shooting, hunting, and fishing.

He was survived by his wife of 56 years, Jean; his daughter, Sherry and husband Rand; and 2 grandchildren.
