Knut was the eldest of three sons and six daughters born to Alfred Anders Swanson and Maria Charlotta Jansdotter (Jon's daughter), both from Sweden.
Grandson of Sven Jonsson (Jon's son) 1806-1885 and Helena Sophia Gronlund 1815-1867, Jans Jonsson (Jon's son) 1804-1858 and Stina Nilsdotter (Nil's daughter) born 1815.
Traditionally, Knut's last name was Svenson, but changed it to Swanson once in the states.
The family immigrated to the US aboard the steamship Rollo departing June 6, 1879 from Gothenburg, Sweden, heading for Hull, England with a final destination of Columbus. The Sweden records show his birth place as Kalmar, Lofta and destination as "Nordamerika."
Knut became the husband of Emma Maria Broberg, the daughter of Nils Broberg and Elna Larsdotter.
They were married in 1894 in Madison, Nebraska and had the following children, the first eight born in Nebraska, the last two were born in Texas:
* Sylvia Rose Swanson, Mrs Carl Ruben Salmonson 1894–1977
* Estella V Swanson, Mrs David Erickson 1896–1971

-The 1910 census has the family, which includes all but the last two sons, living in Justice Precinct 4, Swisher, Texas with 29 year old hired hand Harry P Smith.
- The 1920 census has the family now in Fairview in Merced County, Knut is now widowed, Sylvia is married and no longer in the household. The family owns their own home and farm.

Knut Swanson, 64, prominent rancher of Hilmar, was found early Sunday morning by his two youngest sons, Royal and Russell, when they entered the barn. Swanson was found lying face down in a horse stall, his face buried in the dirt. Swanson was a native of Sweden and had been a resident of the district for fourteen years. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Newman Grove, Nebraska. He is survived by eight sons and three daughters.
