Nathaniel YORK is the forth of nine children born to John YORK, Jr. and his Wife Hannah HAMMER of Randolph County, North Carolina.

Nathaniel's mother Hannah and his youngest brother and sister were survivors of the 1838 Haun's Mill massacre. They took cover in the woods in their log cabin a few miles north of the tragedy when John York, Jr was murdered in the blacksmith log cabin. John age 58 was killed at the horrifying massacre and stuffed into an unfinished well at Haun's Mill on 31 October 1838. Hannah survived taking her 2 youngest children and fleeing to Illinois with other Mormon survivors. She re-married on 11 April 1842 in Pike County, Illinois to Jacob McIntyre.

Nathaniel YORK, born 1806 in Randolph County, North Carolina must have been somewhat of an adventurer on the Ohio River. Nathaniel York, age 19, had most likely rafted up the Ohio River to Preble County, Ohio where on 09 Jun 1825 he married Elizabeth "Betsy" BISHOP, age 21, in Preble County, Ohio. They were the parents of six children:

1. Hannah YORK, b. 30 Aug 1827 IN; d. 21 Mar 1895, IN
2. Mary YORK, b. 1830 IN; d. aft 1850 IN
3. Benjamin S. YORK, b. 18 Jan 1832 OH; d. 02 Aug 1909, IN
4. Sarah Elizabeth YORK, b. 1834 OH; d. 16 Jun 1923 IN
5. Laura Jane YORK, b. 18 May 1836 OH; d. 1872 IN
6. Rebecca Jane YORK, b. 1837 IN; d. ? IN

After Marriage Apparently Nathaniel and Betsy traveled back down the Ohio River and briefly settled in Henry County, Indiana where they had two children, Hannah and Mary YORK. Then they traveled back to Ohio where three more children were born in Butler County; Benjamin, Sarah Elizabeth, and Laura Jane YORK. Then back to Indiana where Rebecca Jane York was born in Wayne County. Finally Nathaniel and Betsy YORK migrated into Miami County, Indiana where other members of their YORK family had settled.
