Ione Nelson Jasper, age 80, passed away Monday, May 30th at the Ogden Regional Medical Center.
She was born May 3, 1936 in Logan, Utah, the ninth of Orville Elias and Esther Theresa Eames Nelson's ten children. She grew up in rural College Ward, where she developed a strong work ethic, integrity, service to others, and made friends for life.
She valued her pioneer heritage. She loved to cook and sew, and developed at an early age a love for music, which she unselfishly shared throughout her life. A vocalist and accompanist, she sang in small groups, which presented programs throughout Cache Valley for many years. She was a ward organist most of her life. She was competitive in sports, and supported USU athletics with her family over the years.
Ione loved to learn. She attended schools in College Ward, Wellsville Jr. High, was a South Cache High School graduate and attended Utah State University. She graduated from the Logan LDS Institute of Religion. She completed many family history courses, researched family lines, and was a family history consultant. She enjoyed writing and compiling family histories, and was a member of the Summit Camp, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.
She valued her membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served wherever called in her ward and stake, including stake Primary president. She loved scripture reading. She was a leader in Scouting programs and was proud of her family's Eagle Scouts. She was a recipient of her District's leadership Award of Merit. Ione was a dedicated visiting teacher and friend. She was an ordinance worker in the Logan temple.
The summer of 1957 Ione worked in Los Angeles, CA, where she met John Thomas Jasper from Duluth, MN. They were married in the Logan LDS Temple on October 12, 1960. While in L.A. she sang in the Mormon Choir of Southern California.
Fondest family memories are of vacations with relatives on the lakes of MN and WI, and later years in Scottsdale, AZ. Mom and Dad made an addition to their home, and enjoyed hosting family gatherings for many years. Memories of gathering around Dad's home-made pot-bellied stove will live forever.
Ione enjoyed serving in PTA, chairing Smithfield Health Days, and then looked forward to supporting her grandchildren's activities.
Ione was employed at USU over 22 years, where she worked for five department heads in Animal, Dairy & Veterinary Sciences. She valued her USU friends.
She is survived by her children, David John (Jennifer), South Ogden; Sharon Herbert (Ernie), Syracuse and Saudi Arabia; Steven Dale (Wendy), Bozeman, MT, beloved grandchildren (two with spouses); 2 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Alice B. Nelson, North Ogden and V. Thomas Geary, Albion, ID; numerous beloved nieces, nephews and their families; Michael and Lisa Triolo, special family members. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Bruce Charles; grandson, Derek Jasper; siblings, Dale, Wilma, Carole, Elaine, Jerry, Theresa, Ray, Connie, and Ivan; brothers-in-law, Don Erickson, Rex Fuhriman, and Robert Pattee.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 4, 2016 in the Smithfield 25th Ward Chapel, 675 West 200 North, in Smithfield. There will be a visitation on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan, and prior to the services on Saturday at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
