Phillip Briggs was born November 15, 1800 to William and Abigail Briggs at Clarendon, VT. He married Lydia Dyer on October 6, 1834. They had six children; Harriet L, Josephine M., Mary E., Lydia D., Susan O., and Minerva A.
He arrived in Topeka Township, Kansas Territory in October 1854, locating on the northwest quarter of Section 5, Town 12, Range 16.

From a letter by F. L. Crane reflecting on what he witnessed in early Topeka:

…The smaller building on the Avenue nearly opposite the point of observation, was owned by Phillip Briggs, who had some thought of getting others to pre-empt for him, what he could not himself pre-empt, of all of the handsome bottom land east of the Shunganunga. He was shot in his cabin over there and found lying in his gore. Thos. G. Thornton and myself cared for him and attended to his effects. …

Administrators’ Notice
   T. G. Thornton and G. W. Crossman give notice that they have been appointed administrators on the estate of Phillip Briggs, deceased.
Kansas Tribune (Lawrence, KS), January 23, 1858, 2:6.

A Letter From Dr. Crane.
…When surveyed, my claim took or included a handsome portion of the splendid bottom land which had been claimed by Phillip Briggs. Poor Briggs wanted all that bottom land, and who blamed him: Who shot him? T. G. Thornton was very particular, when he, as administrator of Briggs’ estate, selected a lot in the cemetery for him so situated that when he “arose” he might have a full view of his favorite land, and say, “well, there, that is mine!” …
Weekly Commonwealth (Topeka, KS), December 9, 1875, 3:7.

Siblings: Ethelinda (1798-), Mary (1802-), Harriett (1805-) and Minerva (1808-).
