He learned to fly in Logan, Utah through the Civilian Pilot Training Program in 1939. He became a flight instructor and instructed for the CPT until he was hired by Western Airlines in 1942. He flew for the "Sourdough Operation" at Western, under contract to the Air Transport Command, flying freight throughout Alaska, western Canada and the Yukon Territory until the end of WWII.
After the war he was based in Los Angeles, living first in Glendale, then Redondo Beach. He moved to Rancho Palos Verdes in 1958. Mr. Sedey retired from Western as a DC-10 captain in 1976.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Sedey; his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Arne Melander of Bergen, Norway; his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Lynne Sedey of Redondo Beach; his son, John Sedey of Hermosa Beach. His other daughter, Joanne Chambers, passed away in 1984.
Other survivors include six grandchildren: Bjorn Melander and Marianne Viste of Bergen, Norway; Bryan Sedey of Kansas City, Missouri; Joseph Chambers of San Diego; Justin Chambers of Seaford, Delaware; and Joanna Marie Brooks of Canton, Ohio. His granddaughter, Laurie Sedey, passed away in 1995. He is also blessed with nine great-grandchildren.
He is the brother of the late John Sedey of Kemmerer, Wyoming, and is survived by three nephews and their wives: James and Donna Sedey of Kemmerer, Frank and Charlotte Sedey of Kemmerer, Raymond and Sandy Sedey of Helena, Montana; and numerous grand and great-grandnieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held July 19, 2010 at the Green Hills Memorial Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes. A reception will be held at Restaurant Christine, 24530 Hawthorne Blvd. in Torrance, following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Braille Institute of America or the Low Vision Center at St. Mary's Medical Center, Long Beach.
