June 30, 1920, Charlevoix County, MI; Pneumonia Takes Pioneer Resident-Mrs. Sarah Vote, one of the Early Settlers of County-Mrs. Sarah Vote, one of Charlevoix's early pioneer settlers, died at her home on the north side, Sunday, June 27th, after a short illness from pneumonia.

She and her husband built one of the first residences erected in the city (NOW) called East Jordan. The funeral was heldfrom the home Tuesday, interment at Brookside Cemetery.

Sarah "Phillips" was the daughter of Peter Phillips (son of John Phillips & Isabell Phinney) and Elizabeth Neville (daughter of Moses Nevill & Elizabeth Mitchell). Sarah was one of ten children born to her parents in Ontario, Canada.
They were:
1.Catherine Phillips-m. 1st to Ebeneezer Houghton,2nd to Peter Courtney
2.Isabell Phillips-m. David Willey
3.Priscilla Phillips-m. Andrew Moore
4.George Phillips-died as a child
5.John Phillips-m. 1st Mary Unknown,2nd to Margaret Armstrong
6.Peter Andrew Phillips-m. Mary Ann Wilson
7.Sarah Phillips-m. 1st Wm Rodman alias Wm Provost, 2nd to John Lloyd,3rd to Wm Jackson Vote/Vought
8. Elizabeth Phillips-m.Thomas Kirkwood
9.William Phillips-m. Mary McLellan
10.Andrew Phillips-m. Sarah Willis

Sarah "Phillips"first wed Wm Rodman alias Wm Provost/Prevost, 17 Dec 1846 in Algona, Cottrellville, St. Clair County, MI. They had five children:
1.Joseph R Provost-b.11 Aug 1848, Ekfrid,Ont,Canada

Wm Rodman Provost died 29 Apr 1857-59 and is buried in Wardsville,Mosa Twp,Middlesex Co.,Ont,Can (1st wed to Sally Sidell)

Sarah "Phillips" second married John Lloyd of Camden,Kent Co.,Ont,Can (son of William Francis Lloyd & Sarah "Holmes") on 12 Sep 1858 in Cottrellville, St. Clair Co., MI. They had three children:
1.Sarah Jane Lloyd-b. 3 Jul 1859, Dresden,Ont,Canada
2.Margaret Lloyd-b. 16 Aug 1861, Camden,Ont,Canada
3.John W. Lloyd-b. 11 Apr 1864,Camden,Ont,Canada

John Lloyd enlisted in the Michigan Infantry Co. "A" 15th regiment, 12 Apr 1864 and died 24 Sep 1864 in East Point, Georgia

Sarah "Phillips" married 3rd time to Wm Jackson Vote/Vought, 28 Dec 1867, Trowbridge Twp,Allegan Co.,MI. They had three children:
1.Mary Elizabeth Vote-b. 13 Oct 1868
2.Melissa Vote-b. Apr 1870. Believe she died young.
3.Augusta Maria Vote-b. 1872

Sarah Phillips third marriage to wm. Jackson Vote who was a constable, lumberman, had a saw mill & a large farm resulted in a migration to the northern area of Michigan which was still wilderness. Family history states one of Wm. Jackson Vote's older sons ventured north to work in lunber. The son was to have setted in Brevort, Upper Peninsula, Mackinac County, along the Lake Michigan shore. Wm. Vote was to have followed his son. It is speculated Sarah Phillips with all of her Provost children & all of her Lloyd children with the exception of Sarah Jane Lloyd (who remained in Allegan County, perhaps stayingwith her Aunt Margaret "Lloyd" Drury, married John Lamper & had five children, dying in 1897.) made the move to the north with her husband Wm Jackson Vote & his father John Vote who was in his 90's.
It is unclear where they moved first. Either Charlevoix County, lower Michigan or Epoufette, Hendricks Co, Upper Michigan. Research shows from obituary of W.E. Empey-One of East Jordans earliest settlers, that Empey came to East Jordan in 1874 when the region was a wilderness & the place as of yet unnamed. Mr. Empey was the first settler at that point. He was connected with the lumbering interests and traveled the state locating pine land for a Toledo firm. In 1874 he built a store on the eastern shores of the South Arm and the following year began putting up the first building as a store on the present site of East Jordan. About this time a blacksmith named John Vote came along and Mr. Empey induced him to locate here. Court records show by 1887 Wm and Srah vote owned a 5 acre farm in the area of Ironton (East Jordan area today). This was located on Pine Lake 6 miles south of the Ironton ferry. Wm Jackson Vote built a blacksmith shop in Ironton, as well as being a gunsmith, carpenter and stone mason.
1880 census shows Sarah Phillips, Provost and Lloyd children living within Charlevoix County area in Michigans lower peninsula. While Sarh, Wm, his father John Vote and the young Vote daughters living in Hendricks Twp, Mackinac Co., Upper Peninsula Michigan, also Sarah's Provost daughter Priscella married to Jacob Brown, listed as school teacher along with their two small children in Epoufette, Mackinac Co., Upper Peninsula Michigan, on the southern shore of the peninsula on Lake Mich. Wm Jackson Vote built a sawmill, blacksmith shop and operated a 2 mastsail boat, transporting produce along the shore of Lake Michigan from St. Ignace and other ports to possibly Charlevoix, MI. In which Lake Michigan flows inland from Charlevoix to Pine Lake (now Charlevoix Lake where Ironton, South Arm, East Jordan and Boyne City are located). This would have given the family the advantage of being able to travel back and forth and for Wm and Sarah to have locations in Ironton and the upper peninsula Epoufette, Brevort area. Wm Jackson Vote is listed in the book "Ghost Towns of the Upper Peninsula" as being a blacksmith in Brevort in 1893, along with his son George being a mason and fisherman. Wm Votes sailing vessel went down in 1892 in Lake Huron and was to be salvaged the following summer but it was destroyed by a gale.
A letter from Sarah Votes grandson, Arnold Copeland says he visited Epoufette in the year 1948 and said the log house that Sarah and Wm Vote built and lived i was still standing.
Wm vote died 29 July 1897:From Charlevoix Sentinel, Wed Aug 18,1897 in Ironton, MI. East Jordan Enterprise: Mrs. Chas Rohr was called to Ironton last Thursday by the illness and death of her father, Wm Vote. Mr. Vote will be remembered as the gentlemanwho visited here (East Jordan) last spring and carried his years so well that, though 96 years of age he looked not more than 60. Shortly before his illness, Mr. Vote had taken the job of building a stone wall, which showed he felt as young as he looked.~death due to dropsey.
Wm Votes other wives, Sarah Cooper died in 1863 and Mary Noble died in 1867.
Sarah "Phillips" Vote remained in Charlevoix County in the farm house with the majority of her Provost/Prevost, Lloyd and Vote/Vought children encircling her through out her life. 1900-1910 census show children and grandchildren living within her household and surrounding dwellings. In 1913 Sarah is found in the Charlevoix Court records submitting an affadavit to her knowledge of the Rodman name change to Provost involving her first husband Wm Rodmans alias Wm Provosts family. The name change was due to a duel resulting in the death of the adversary of one Joseph Rodman (William Rodman Provosts father).
Although Sarah Phillips Vote's death certificate states she was born 1 June 1830, Wealthy "Lamper" Johnson, daughter of Sarah Jane "Lloyd" Lamper states her grandmother Sarah Vote died at age 93 in Charlevoix, MI. From that information I believe Sarah Phillips may have been born in 1827, not in 1830.
I am in hopes some of this info may be of help to anyone who may be trying to unravel their family lineage of any of these surnames mentioned within.
Sarah "Phillips" Provost Lloyd Vote was truly a pioneer and it has been amazing to unravel her footprints in life. I am proud to have her as my great great grandmother.
Although Sarah's obituary states she was buried in Brookside Cemetery, when I contacted the cemetery office they had no record of Sarah Vote being buried there. Whether from lost records or early fire to records, I have been unable to find out why there are no records. I myself have walked through the entire cemetery and have not found a headstone for Sarah Vote nor her husband William. Although there is a plot for Joseph Vote and other Vote members. I suspect Sarah is in an unmarked grave.
