Pioneer citizen of the village passed away Sunday after an illness of many months
Millersburg lost one of its pioneer citizens Sunday when Charles Atkins, for years one of its prominent business men, passed away. Mrs. Atkins had veen in poor health for a number of years. He was 76 years of age.
Mr. Atkins was born Nov. 24th, 1868, in St. Clair county. He came to Millersburg in 1903 from Black River and purchased the David Watson store. For many years he sold shoes and furniture and was in the undertaking business. Some 15 years ago his store burned and he retired from business, purchased a farm near Millersburg and engaged in farming to quite an extent. Following a rather serious illness some years ago he retired from active work of any kind.
Mr. Atkins was married to Minnie Maschke of Port Hope. Mrs. Atkins died soon after the birth of a son George and some years later Mr. Atkins married her sister Emma Maschke. Mrs. Atkins survives her husband as well as his son George with whom he has made his home for some years. He also has one brother, Hiram Atkins of Lewiston, Idaho, and a sister, Mrs. Mamie McNutt of Spokane, Wash.
Mr. Atkins was civic minded and took a leading part in village affairs for many years. He served on the school board and on the village council and was a conservative citizen whose judgment was highly prized by his fellow men. We remember him as one of the most kindly men we have ever known.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Karr's funeral home in Onaway, Rev. Charles Dibley officiating and burial was in Millersburg.
