Gordon Loftin (90), a long time resident of Annapolis, died Tuesday at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was born in New York City on October 29, 1925, the third of three children of Edward Hill Loftin, a Naval Academy graduate and World War One veteran and Hazel Wilcox Loftin. After a move to Washington, D.C. he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and then, in 1949, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. After two years sea duty he went through flight training and became a Coast Guard aviator. In 1955, hearing a different drummer, he resigned his commission and then spent 33 years in the defense industry, retiring in 1988. His interests included sailing his cabin sloop on Chesapeake Bay, tennis, poker with friends, private flying, and newspapers. He discovered skiing rather late in life but was fortunate to have had many memorable ski holidays in the middle Atlantic states, Vermont, Colorado, Austria and Italy. He met Inez E. Olson of Annapolis in 1986 and therein followed 26 years of companionship which included many rewarding travels together. She died in 2012. He was a member of the Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association and the Coast Guard Aviation Association. He is survived by his daughter Virginia K. Loftin and grandson Noah Loftin Seiler of Highland Park, New Jersey, one niece and several nephews. Burial will be private at Arlington National Cemetery.
