James Kent was a son of William Kent and Ellen Cleary Kent, of Clogheen, Co. Tipperary.
He joined what later became the Royal Irish Constabulary on 15 January 1862.
Promoted in 1871 to Assistant Constable, and in October 1873, Constable Kent was transferred to Ballymoe, in north-east County Galway.
in October 1883, he was promoted to Head Constable, and later transferred to County Louth, serving in Ardee and Drogheda.
He retired in April 1892, and the family moved to Dublin.

James Kent married Johanna Galway on 8 January 1870, at Ballyhea, near Charleville, Co. Cork.
They had eight children,

Death.
James Kent, aged 72, a widower, a House Agent, died on 17 March 1912, at 13 St. Alphonsus Road, Drumcondra, Dublin
The cause of death was Heart Failure, certified.
His death was registered on 23 March 1912, by Richard Kent, son of deceased, of 73 Richmond Road
