James Wright was born in 1752/1753, the son of James Wright, Sr and Rachel Wells. He was one of 16 children.

He married Sarah Haworth in 1774 in Bush River, South Carolina. (Sarah was the daughter of James Haworth and Sarah Wood)

James and Sarah were parents of at least 10 children:
John (married Margaret Reese;
Phebe (married Absalom Haworth);
Sarah (married Shuball Ellis);
Rachel Ruth (married James B. Haworth);
James (married Hannah Andrews);
Elizabeth (married Jonathan Williams or Thomas Dillon);
Jesse Isaac (married Abigail Dillon);
Charity (married Luke Dillon);
William (married 1st Hannah Dillon; 2nd Nancy Malsby);
Susannah (married Achilles C. Johnson)

James' parents were Quaker ministers, and they followed the Quaker migration routes from Pennsylvania/Virginia to the Carolinas, and then on to Ohio.

There were many intermarriages in this Quaker family between the Wright, Haworth, and Dillon families.

James died in Ohio in 1812.

Note: Some records state that James was born in Cane Creek, North Carolina.

One of James' sisters was Charity Wright, who married Isaac Cook, and became a famous itinerant Quaker minister, who traveled abroad for several years, and still managed to become the mother of 11 children. A book was written about her and her family)
