Clair McIlrath, 85, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Hartwick and Brooklyn, died Friday, June 1, in Mesa General Hospital, Mesa, Ariz.
Funeral services for Mr. McIlrath were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, in the Nevenhoven Funeral Home, Brooklyn. His nephew, Rev. James Dale, officiated and the organist was Mrs. Sybil Kelley.
Casketbearers were Duane Ferneau, Donald Ferneau, Darrell Ferneau, Brent Ferneau, Dallas Ferneau and Craig McIlrath. Interment was in the Brooklyn cemetery, Brooklyn, with military rites conducted by members of Francis Gallagher American Legion Post No. 294 of Brooklyn.
Nathaniel Clair McIlrath, son of Nathaniel and Stella Hakeman McIlrath, was born Feb. 23, 1905 in Hartwick. He served with the U.S. Navy from Dec. 17, 1942 to Nov. 1, 1945. On June 3, 1926 Mr. McIlrath was united in marriage in Hartwick to Anna Blanche Force. Mr. McIlrath spent most of his adult life in the Hartwick and Brooklyn area. He was a painter and owned and operated a paint and wallpaper store in Brooklyn. He retired in 1966 and they moved to Mesa, Ariz.
Mr. McIlrath was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Mesa, Ariz., Knights of Pythias of Brooklyn, and Francis Gallagher American Legion Post No. 294.
Surviving are his wife, Blanche, two daughters, Velma, Mrs. Loren Shaw, of Bull Head City, Ariz. and Violet, Mrs. Melvin Ferneau of Montezuma; two sons, Max of Aurora, Colo. and Wallace of Houston, Tex.; three sisters, Mrs. Leona Martin of Tama, Mrs. Evalena Dale of Brooklyn, and Mrs. Lila Foster of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, Floyd of Vinton and Clifford of Shellsburg; 13 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
