The eldest child (of three) and the only son of William Herbert and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Hickman) Onions. His two sisters were Maude (b. 1875) and Sarah (b. 1878).

On Sept. 19, 1896 he married Miss Clara J Bird (b. 1876) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their firstborn child, Leroy, lived for 27 days in June 1900. Their second child, Myrtle, was born in Aug. 1901 and died after her first birthday in Aug. 1902. Their third child was Florence, b. Oct. 1904.

In about 1907, the Onions family moved to the Warren, Pennsylvania area (also Pittsfield) where they lived most of their lives.

His wife Clara died in April 1949. Herbert moved to Clearwater, Florida in 1956 where he died three years later at age 84. He was survived by his daughter, Florence (J. Bremner) Proctor, and his grandson Herbert J Proctor (b. 1935) as well as an unknown number of grandchildren. Both of his sisters predeceased him.
