Hulda was raised a Mormon. Her and David along with her parents lived in St. Joseph, MO, Putnam Co. MO and Appanoose Co. Iowa where they lived over twenty years. David died or was killed around 1860 leaving her to raise six children. She had very little money. The eldest son Manley went into the Union Army as a drummer boy. He was approximately 16 years old. She worked in Sioux city Iowa for a Dr for a year and then in Sept 1874 she followed her parents to California. She took Maggie, Mathias and Jeannie with her. Leaving Frank with friends to raise. David Eli followed her to California around 1876.
As the children grew to adult hood she helped her elderly father Eli. My reading of Journal B was a very heart warming experience about my family in early California. You can find it by searching google.
