Pioneer Castro Resident Buried Here Wednesday

George T. Abbott, 83-year-old retired farmer-stockman of the Sunnyside Community, passed away at the Castro County Hospital here Monday at 7 p. Services for the pioneer Castro countian were conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. from Sunnyside Baptist Church. Dr. A. Hope Owen, president of Wayland College, officiated. He was assisted by Rev. C.M. Rogers, pastor of Sunnyside Church, and Dean Bryan Robinson of Wayland College. Dennis Funeral Home was in charge of burial, which was in the Dimmitt Cemetery.

A resident of Castro county since 1890, Mr. Abbott had suffered several heart attacks and had been in ill health since 1946.

Born in Walla Walla, South Carolina in 1871, Mr. Abbott came to Parker county with his family when he was 13-years-old. He went to work on the XIT Ranch in this area in 1891. In 1896 Mr. Abbott filed on four sections of land in Castro county and in later years became one of the county's most successful cattlemen and farmers. He is listed as the first qualified voter in the county.

Mr. Abbott was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Baptist Church.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Milburne Abbott; one daughter, Mrs. Walter Graham of Happy; a brother, Press Abbott of Bovina; and four grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Pallbearers were Raymond Haydon, Norris Worrell, Guy Willis, Otto Dinwiddle, Jeff Gilbreath, Albert Mize, Howard Bridges and Roy Riley.
