A short memorial service for Lee R. Friend, 70, formerly of Gainesville, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at the Thornfield Cemetery. Mr. Friend died May 4 at the Springfield Rehabilitation Health Center in Springfield after a long illness.

He was born Sept. 11, 1945, in Ozark County, the son of Harrison and Iva Lawson Friend.

As a young man, Mr. Friend moved to Washington State, where he lived, worked and raised his family. There he retired from carpentry work. When his health began to deteriorate he returned to Gainesville to be near family and friends. He began going to Lilly Ridge General Baptist Church, which he came to love as his own church family.

He is survived by one son, Steve Friend of Washington State; one daughter, Krista Polman and husband Gary, and one granddaughter, Rylee Polman, all of Menasha, Wisconsin; one brother, Edd Friend and wife Ina of Noble; five sisters, Fern Cantwell and Polly Ousley, both of Ava, Peggy Robbins and husband Bob, and Freda Loftis, all of Gainesville, and Maxine DeBord of Princeville, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and nine sisters, and many nieces and nephews.
