Walter P. Gambill, 79, of the 500 block of June Terrace, Deland, Fla., died May 19, 2002, at home.

Mr. Gambill was born in Coxton, Ky., graduated from high school, retired as an aviation metal smith with the Civil Service in Virginia Beach and volunteered with Meals on Wheels in Deland. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries incurred in Germany during the war. He enjoyed fishing and bowling.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret L. Gambill of Deland, Fla.; sons, Patrick Gambill of Chesapeake and Philip R. Gambill of Virginia Beach; daughter, Emma Jean Stowe of Virginia Beach; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Stephen Gambill.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Rosewood Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 671, Daytona Beach, FL 32115-0671. Carpenter-Curry Funeral Home, Deland, Fla. (386-736-0021), is handling arrangements.
