Born in Missouri, David Alexander Brannan was the second child of Thomas Jefferson Brannan and Almira Juliatha Rogers Brannan. Shortly after his birth, the family traveled by wagon train to Susanville, California. David's sister, Juliatha Almira, was born either while traveling to or soon after their arrival in Susanville.

In 1862, David's older brother, Daniel, died at the age of four. After Daniel's death, and the birth of David's sister, Milla (Millie) Alice, the family again traveled by wagon train, but this time to Oregon and the Washington Territory.

First settling in Benton County, Oregon, where David's younger brothers were born, the family moved to Washington, finally settling in Peach, Washington. Eventually the family home was destroyed when Peach, Washington was flooded, creating Lake Roosevelt for the Roosevelt Dam.

David Alexander Brannan married Martha Ione Horner on June 6,1879. The couple had four children: Charles Daniel, James C, Lizzie, and Almira.

David Alexander Brannan died at Fort Steilacoom, Washington on June 20, 1925. Preceded in death by his son Charles and daughter Almira, he was survived by his wife and remaining children.
