Simon Bennett, 78, Florman Hotel, a former professional baseball player, died Monday in a Duluth hospital.
He was born in Manchester, England, and was a Duluth resident for the past 75 years. In 1902 he took his first baseball job with the St. Cloud semi-pro team and the following season he played for the Big Duluth semi-pro club.
In 1904, he played in the outfield of the Duluth White Sox and was a member of the team the following season when it won its second straight pennant.
He played at various times for Duluth and Superior in the Northern League, managed Medicine Hat in the Western Canadian League in 1909-10, and played for a time in the Three-I League. He also was a catcher on championship indoor baseball teams during the era when that sport was flourishing in Duluth.
Surviving are his wife, Jessie, and two brothers, Benjamin D. and Louis, all of Duluth.
