Retired U.S. Marine Corps Col. Robert Quinton Grider, 88, of Hatton Point Lane, died Oct. 19, 2006. Col. Grider, a native of Kansas City, Kan., retired in 1966 from the U.S. Marine Corps after 33 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam. Col. Grider was also the last commanding officer of the former Marine Corps Annex, Pig Point/Marford, which is now the Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth campus. His passion in life was golf, and as a member of Cedar Point and Elizabeth Manor Country clubs, he was always proud of his seven holes-in-one. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Jean Dollison Grider. Survivors include his wife, Mary K. Grider; a daughter, Nancy Grider Bergaa of Estero, Fla.; two grandchildren, Gordon E. Parker Jr. of Virginia Beach and Chandler E. Parker of Irvine, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. today in Aldersgate United Methodist Church by the Rev. Larry E. Adams. Burial, will full military honors, will be Dec. 7, 2006, in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 4320 Bruce Road, Chesapeake, VA 23321. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements.
