Some sources attribute her maiden as "Johnston"; however, her parents appear to have married under the name of "Johnson" in Johnsons Lick, Davidson County, Tennessee, in 1772. Her father was David Johnson, who died in Johnsons Lick in 1777. Her widowed mother, née Robertson, married secondly to John Cockrill in 1780 in Nashville.
