STRANGE, WALTER PIERREPONT, age 88 passed away March 8, 2010 in Apache Junction, AZ. Born April 9, 1921 in Beloit KS.

Preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn (Lynn) Lelia Strange; his father, Col. William Jennings Bryan Strange; his mother, Lois Helen Pierrepont Strange; grandfather Charles Eddie Strange and grandmother, Inez Caulkins Strange.

He is survived by his second wife, Beverly; his brother, Herbert Franklin Strange, his son, Craig Pierrepont Strange; daughter, Chris Lynwood Strange Grant and five grandchildren, Alyson Irene Strange Eddie, Russell Pierrepont Strange and Blair Lynn Strange, children of Craig, Tealer Erick Grant and Grayson Pierrepont Grant, children of Chris, and step daughter Sarah Sordyl and her children Cameron and Megan.

He excelled in sports, wresting, football, and golf champion at the University of Illinois.

Walter was inducted into the army in 1942 by his father, Col. Strange at Ft, Sheridan, IL. Assigned to Aberdeen proving ground where he worked on weapons systems and tanks. Because of his expertise he was assigned to the British 8th army in north Africa with the Australian 7th armored division to evaluated U.S. armor and weapons. With his troops, mounted machine guns on jeeps and became the original "desert rats." He was badly wounded taken to Cairo and transferred to England.

He joined with American forces and landed at Normandy on "D" Day. Fighting through the hedge rows of France with Gen. Patton's Armored division. He was one of the solders to enter Paris on patrol and ordered to leave so Charles DeGaulle could enter first. He was awarded the British Bronze Star (one of five Americans so honored), two American Bronze Stars, purple heart, four battle stars, and the French Legion of merit.

After his discharge on August 24, 1945, he purchased Evan's Feed Store in Highland Park, IL. With his mother, opened Strange's Toy and Patio Shop also in Highland Park. He and his brother started Evan's Go Karts, manufacturing one of the top Karts in the county. They opened Evan's Kart track outside of Chicago, hosting many national and regional Karting championships.

He was active in Highland Park's Lion's club, Chamber of Commerce, Elk's club, American Legion, President of the Retail Pet shop Assoc., Board of directors for the Kart industry.

He and Lynn moved to California where Lynn passed away August 20, 1999.

He remarried and retired to Apache Junction, AZ. Part of "The Greatest Generation," he was a devoted husband and father and a true hero.

His ashes will be interred, April 8th at Forest Lawn Memorial in Cypress, CA., along with his mother, Lynn and her mother.
