John Franklin Senft, 73, died at 9 PM Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, in his West Lafayette home. Born April 13, 1933, at York, PA, he was a graduate of West York High School, and served in the Army from 1955-1957. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Penn State University and, in 1958, a doctorate from Purdue University.

Mr. Senft was an associate professor of wood science at Purdue from 1959 to 1996. He held memberships in Kiwanis, Tau Phi Delta Fraternity, Forest Products Research Society, Lafayette Wood Carvers, Society of Wood Science and Technology, and was past president of WALLA.

Among his professional honors was the Fred W. Gottschalk Award for service from the Forest Products Research Society in 1996, and the L.J. Markwardt Award for wood engineering research in 1971. He was recognized for outstanding leadership as regional board member for the east central region for the years 1993-1996.

From 1959 to 1996, he studied vagaries and exasperations of juvenile wood and received an award in 1980 for contribution to the Education Forest Products Research Society Student Chapter. He enjoyed antique tool collecting, wood carving, growing bonsai and gardening.

His marriage to Kathryn Glatfelter was Jan. 25, 1958. She survives along with a daughter, Nancy Beedle (husband Richard) of Indianapolis; a sister, Elizabeth Senft of York, PA; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Senft; and a brother, Walter Senft, Jr.
