Elizabeth Senft died Sunday, August 2, 2015, at Spiritrust Lutheran Home at Sprenkle Drive in York at the age of 93.
She was born July 2, 1922, in York, the daughter of the late Walter Melvin Senft and Rhoda Garber Senft. Her parents, her two brothers, Walter M. Senft, Sr. and John Franklin Senft, her sister-in-law, Meta Senft, and her two nephews, Rodger Senft and Daniel Senft, preceded her in death.
She is survived by one sister-in-law and three nieces and their families.
She graduated from West York High School and obtained her BA degree in Education from Penn State in 1943 and her Master's degree in French from Middlebury College Language School in 1955. To obtain this degree, she spent one year studying at the University of Paris in 1954-55. She worked for 37 years as a teacher of Latin, French, Spanish and English in West York High School, following one year at Mount Rose Junior High School in York, where she taught Latin, French and history. She was head of the Language Department at West York, retiring in 1981. She was a member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church where she participated in the art class, the Tuesday Bible Study group, the Half Century group, and the book review group, while volunteering as the church librarian. She was also a member of College Club, the York Twinning Association, the York chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, the Alpha Lambda Delta Scholastic Society, the Phi Sigma Iota foreign language honor society and the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. For 28 years, she served as a volunteer in the Book Nook annual sale of the York Hospital Fete. She was also a volunteer for many years for the Historical Society of York County, where she was a docent at the Plough Tavern, Gates House, Barnett Bobb Log Cabin and Colonial Court House facilities. Ms. Senft traveled extensively in Europe and the United States. She enjoyed reading, music and the study of history.
Viewing will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, August 7, 2015 at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, 839 W. Market St. in York. Funeral services will follow on Friday at the church beginning at 11 a.m., with her pastor, the Rev. Keith C. Fair, officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Grove Cemetery.
