DEBBIE WHITE
1947-2016
Musician, Teacher,
Mother, Grandmother,
Sister, Friend

As a teenager, Debbie was part of the Galena Park TX Jr High and Wilmington IL High School Bands, in which she played flute and piccolo. She loved marching band, baton twirling, playing tennis with her dad and all things musical. Debbie graduated from Wilmington High School in 1965; attended Illinois Wesleyan and Northern Illinois universities and graduated with a BA in Education, focusing on music education and folk literature. By the time she began teaching full-time, she was an accomplished flutist, who had played with the Chicago Symphony at Ravinia. Debbie taught private flute lessons for many years. Debbie also taught band and music in public schools in Huntsville AL, Angleton TX, Panama City FL, and Watkinsville GA. She earned a Masters of Education from the University of Georgia in 1985 and a Specialist of Education degree in 1990. Debbie was a musician and an educator. Many of her students have gone on to become teachers themselves.

In retirement, Debbie took great pride and pleasure in her work at a local women's specialty clothing store, Catherine's. She enjoyed assisting ladies in looking and feeling their best. Nothing, however, gave her as much joy as being with her sweet grandbaby Neil and his vivacious big sister Sabrina. Giving them the best life possible was the focus of her last years.

Debbie passed away early Tuesday morning, 10 May 2016, in Athens GA, after years of chronic asthma. She was preceded in death by her parents, Neil and Effie White of Huntsville AL, and her brother, Neil Jr. of Lewisburg TN.

She is survived by her three sisters: Judy Johnson of Wilmington IL; Carolyn Davis of Pipe Creek TX; and Barbara Strickland of Huntsville AL; her daughter, Susan Satterwhite Williams of Athens GA; her two grandchildren, Sabrina and Neil; Susan's father, H Dwight Satterwhite, Jr.; her nine nieces and nephews; and her many cousins, in-laws, friends and associates.

A memorial service was held Monday 16 May 2016 at New Covenant Worship Center in Athens GA. Debbie had asked that we play a CD of "The Minute Waltz," performed by Sir James Galway, as part of that service, and it was beautiful. It made me think she was reminding us that our time in this life is short, so put your heart into it and play it so well it moves others to greatness. She is missed.

Respectfully submitted,
with words from all the family,
Debbie's sister, Carolyn
